For both Phones and Laptops: What to do when your device get wet! Rain & Personal Electronics

For both Phones and Laptops:

  • Power Off Immediately:

    • This is the most crucial step. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination, and keeping the device on can cause a short

      circuit and further damage.

  • Remove External Devices:

    • Unplug any chargers, USB drives, headphones, or other accessories.

  • Dry the Exterior:

    • Use a soft, absorbent cloth (like a microfiber cloth) to gently dab and dry the exterior of the device. Avoid rubbing, as this can push water further inside.

  • Avoid Heat:

    • Do not use a hairdryer or place the device in direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause more damage.

  • Don't use rice:

    • While a common suggestion, rice is not very effective, and can cause other issues, like rice dust getting lodged in ports. Silica gel packets are far more effective.

Specific to Phones:

  • Remove the Case and Battery (if possible):

    • If your phone has a removable case and battery, take them off immediately. Also, remove the SIM card and microSD card.

  • Use Silica Gel:

    • If you have silica gel packets (those small packets that come with new shoes or electronics), place your phone in a sealed bag with them. They are very effective at absorbing moisture.

  • Let it Dry:

    • Allow your phone to dry for at least 24-48 hours in a well-ventilated area.

Specific to Laptops:

  • Invert the Laptop:

    • Carefully turn the laptop upside down to allow any water to drain out.

  • Remove the Battery (if possible):

    • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.

  • Professional Help:

    • Consider taking your laptop to a professional for cleaning and inspection, especially if a significant amount of liquid was spilled.

Important Considerations:

  • Liquid Type:

    • If the liquid spilled was something other than clean water (like sugary drinks or saltwater), it's even more critical to seek professional cleaning, as these liquids can cause corrosion.

  • Professional Repair:

    • Even if your device seems to be working after drying, internal damage may have occurred. It's advisable to have it checked by a professional.

  • Data Backup:

    • If the device still functions, immediately back up all important data.

By following these steps, you can increase the likelihood of saving your phone or laptop from water damage.
